[Unpopular Opinion] Why Maplestory is declining in popularity

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 01:52 AM PST

This will be a long post so I really thank you for reading. As a Mapler who have played Maplestory since 2006, I have seen the game undergo many major changes over the past fourteen years. Some might argue that the game is in its best state right now, but I disagree. They might say that I am nostalgic, but I can assure you that is not the case. I loved some of the revamps of Maplestory, but from my point of view the cons far outweigh the pros. In the next paragraph I will state the reasons I believe contributed to Maplestory's declining popularity, particularly with the past Maplers. I believe most of you know the population in Maplestory is decreasing. It is already obvious when they came up with the idea of merging worlds and world leap events. I am also sure past maplers have realised this. Many places in Maplestory is pretty empty now. Furthermore, the channels are not as populated as before and many hackers have started appearing. Maplers who joined after Big Bang may not be affected by the changes because the game started like this for them. Just want to reiterate this is entirely my opinion; I am not trying to find fault with anyone. Peace alright?

Lack of a social community: This is the prime reason in my opinion. Party Quests are obsolete (I.e. Every time you do a party quest you will interact with various kinds of maplers while working together to complete the mission. This is a sense of fulfilment you will never get in the current Maplestory), instead we tend to grind alone. Free market is gone and iconic maps such as Henesys Hunting Ground (I.e. Pros and Noobs used to camp, chat and 'KS' each other in this map) are removed. These places are important because they help to build a strong sense of community within the game. I have seen so many Maplers rejoining the game and then quitting not long after because they felt bored. Sure you can join a guild but there is only so much a guild can do. Some of the guilds are just plain quiet and that doesn't make you feel socially included.

No one is also shouting and slacking in Free Market to sell items anymore, instead the auction helps you do that. Yes, the auction is convenient for Maplers to sell items and make mesos. You can also use the dimensional mirror to move to other continents immediately instead of embarking on ships. I love these features, but I cannot deny they hurt the social aspect of the game. For instance, when I embarked on the ship to Orbris, while waiting to arrive at my destination, I have chatted with many maplers who are on board the ship as well. We did many funny things like sneaking out of the ship to see whether the crimson balrog is around. After we arrived at our destination we said farewell to each other and I never see them again. Just to reiterate this is not nostalgia, I am just giving an example how important the social aspect of Maplestory is. Now everyone seems to be focused on increasing their damage, which brings me to my next point. There is so much more I can say, but I think the above is sufficient.

Pay to win: I believed scrolling is a good option to upgrade our EQs. But then came Star Force enhancements which requires tons of mesos, cubing which requires cash etc along with the Potential System. They have also ruined the game in my point of view. Many Maplers then starting spending much more cash on cubes to get their desired potential and reach insane amounts of damage. Before the Potential System came out, Maplers spend cash mostly to either buy the pets to assist in their looting or to buy cosmetics to decorate their character. Damage was not so much of a concern that point. Do you see how this point links to the social aspect of Maplestory as well? With the potential system iconic bosses such as Horntail and Pianus can be easily soloed now, but with the introduction of new and much harder bosses such as Lucid and Will, I guess I can do with it. Afterall the end game bosses must be challenging. If I am nostalgic, I wouldn't even have mentioned Will and Lucid here. But I have to say Lucid and Will will be MUCH HARDER than Horntail was at its prime because when Horntail came out there was no potential System. Now Maplestory knows how powerful the Potential System is they have no choice but to make OP bosses or else the P2W players won't find it much of a challenge.

Too many 'different types of classes' It was this point that convinced me Maplestory knew the player base was declining drastically and they desperately needed something new to attract prospective Maplers and to keep the current maplers occupied. Some of the classes such as Cadena and Pathfinder is just lazily created disappointing. They just copied and paste the skills from other classes. They aren't even unique. See the similarities between Cadena and Xenon and the Similarities between Pathfinder and Windbreaker. In the end they created so many jobs in such a short period of time and as a result, Maplestory couldn't find a way to balance them. When there was just the explorer class each of the jobs have their own unique skills, pros and cons. Now, some classes are OP while some are too weak. To make matters worse, this can only help in the short term as after trying out the new classes for a while, Maplers will be bored again. I understand that as time passes Maplestory will definitely need to create new classes, but they are just doing it far too quickly and if this continues, we will be seeing many new 'recycled' classes in future. But kudos to Maplestory, with the Legion system and Link skills they came up with, it actually motivated the players to try out every job to see what they really like.

Hackers. This is another point I dislike. When you want to grind they appear. When you want to do quests they appear. In every channel and Map. You can't even do anything with them around they just one shot kill the mobs instantly and immediately upon respawning. They make the server lag as well. It seems that the GMS aren't doing anything about it as well despite multiple players complaining and reporting them. This problem wasn't so bad in past maple. Once again I am not nostalgic I am just stating the facts.

THE ABOVE reasons are why I prefer the old Maplestory to the current one. But remember, I said I like a few changes Maplestory have made. One of them is the addition of new content The Black Mage's storyline was done perfectly in my view, Blockbusters were amazing, hyper skills, 5th Job content and many more! Now we also have the grand darmoor storyline. It is amazing how they can write such a great story for the game. There are so many places to explore now and so much more to do! But it also depends whether you choose to grind, or you choose to do the storyline quests and see how the events unfold yourself. But to be fair this is something every game have to do regularly to keep their players entertained.

The new Levelling System. I remembered doing party quests and training day and night in the past just to level up one/two times. It was painful. Now it is so much easier to level up and you do not have to spend as much time grinding. I actually don't mind this new levelling system. Nostalgic Maplers may argue that levelling is easy now and does not give you a sense of fulfilment, but I think they did not realise level 250 is end game now. However, I have to admit that the feeling isn't the same in the current Maple community anymore. In past maple when you reach level 100 you are respected and admired by many Maplers because it was such a hard feat. Reach level 200 and you are a legend. In current Maplestory nobody even cares if you reach level 275. Probably because some past Maplers still cannot get over the fact that levelling to 200 now is so much easier than in the past despite level 275 being the end game level. Reason is Nostalgia I guess.

Thank you for reading my post. I believe I am objective and not blinded by nostalgia. However I do sincerely hope Maplestory can bring back the Social Aspect of the game. Perhaps they can revamp the Party Quests and give out attractive rewards to motivate Maplers to come together again? If you disagree with any of my points feel free to reply to me. The reason I kept saying I am not Nostalgic in my post is because I am pretty sure many maplers will say I am. Many past maplers have already raised my points only to be shot down by others claiming they are nostalgic. As stated above, perhaps if you started Maplestory only after these changes you wouldn't really be bothered by my points I have made; because this is how the game started for you so it must have felt natural for you.

Thank you once again for taking the time to read this. Peace!

How can I level my legion mules faster?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 03:42 PM PST

Currently trying to level my 94 DS to 120. It's incredibly slow - my gear is all maxed on stars (5-10) and I have 17.5k range. It takes like 10-15 seconds to kill anything my level. I have a separate pc for kishin but that doesn't seem to help very much with this low of range. Am I doing something wrong?

Hairstyle changed by itself now cash shop crashes game

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 06:19 PM PST

    Hi guys,

So the game automatically changed my hair and I don't have any hairs saved on the the salon tab for that character. The game crashes every time I enter the cash shop with that character. All my other characters can enter the cash shop just fine. I've sent a ticket and now I'm just waiting for a response. Any ideas on how to fix this in the meantime?

    Thanks

Looking for lore for Romeo/Juliet PQ and Ludibrium

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 09:55 PM PST

I'm unable to find sources on them.. If anyone knows a link to sources or is knowledgeable and willing to chat with me about it that would be fantastic.

I run Dungeons are Dragons games for my friends and have always loved Magatia and Ludibrium. I thought to pay homage to Maplestory for being such a big part of my childhood by taking elements of both places and incorporating it in my campaign.

I feel like this game was designed to slave you

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 04:34 PM PST

I decided to give a chance to the new version of this game. Got to level 5X and felt burnout.

The pixel art is very very good and the soundtrack is awesome , but the game feels like it was designed to slave you.

I was doing a dungeon and i was enjoying a lot the theme (it was about pollution). The monsters in this dungeon are very very cool but the way that the dungeon was designed was not for you to have a good time, but rather to stay trapped for hours doing mindless things.

The history feels like an excuse to "go kill 100 monster A" again and again and again. When i finished the "100 monster A", the new quest was "50 monster B" for a stupid reason. In the end i felt stupid for reading all those texts because it's just a simple excuse to kill the same monster over and over again.

I did two dungeons and i felt like doing the same thing two time but with a different paint. They're basically the same thing.

Everything feels like it was designed to make you stay in the game for hours and hours and hours. Even when you click to logout, they pop-up a screen asking if you want to exit with the button "yes" in gray and "no" in color (the attractive option is to stay in the game, they dont want you to leave)...

I've spent a lot of time in this game today wanting to like this game. The art (specially the new areas) and the music are fantastic but the chore gameplay just feels like a time consuming mindless grind.
