Perspective of the Adversary - A long piece of writing [Late? Game Spoilers]

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:17 PM PDT

Congrats to you who clicks on this post, why you would do such a thing is beyond me, but I've wanted to write this down for a while. Admittedly, most of what I am saying is based solely on what I have read and seen. I am not able to reach this point with my own characters at the current time. If there is any point where my information is faulty, please do inform me.

Within the game, it is commonly accepted that anyone could have been the Adversary of Fate. That's the rules when you make a game with 40+ characters and only one endgame story. But in my opinion, there are points where that idea breaks down, and that there are characters who stand out with a stronger story.

Firstly, the rules behind the Adversary's power seems to be simple enough. When at the end of Blockbuster 1, the Adversary was revived by the Seal Stone, through the collective wish of the Alliance. This gave the Adversary access to the Power of the Seal Stone. The power of the Collective Wish, as I will call it. This means that at the end of the Black Mage's story, the Adversary chooses not to take the ideal of self-sacrifice, but to push forward and embody the Will of the World, the will to keep fighting to live. With the wish, they overcame the Black Mage to save Maple World.

For me, while any of the characters could embody that story, some characters are more tied to the Black Mage. While the title may officially be Adversary of Fate, you are still the Adversary of the Black Mage. No matter how Nexon may avoid it, the fact is that you must fight the Black Mage. So here are my thoughts on each of the different characters and how they tie in storywise.

Explorer, Cygnus Knights, Resistance - Here, I feel quite fine with any of the characters. They have a story, but it's supposed to be a generic one. Your character is shown to be incredibly powerful, and in some way tied to the Black Mage. Especially if it is the Explorer. [This section does not apply to Jett, Mihile, Demon, or Xenon]

Heroes - I generally dislike the idea of some of these characters being the Adversary. Phantom, Mercedes, and Aran make for poor Adversaries, lacking a direct tie to the Black Mage other than "I fought against him and lost centuries ago." Phantom, in particular, should not be working with Orchid. Ever. Mercedes does get the benefit of being the best character to take through Lacheln.

However, in terms of Heroes that do well for the Black Mage, we have Evan, Luminous, and Shade.
    - Shade serves as the pinnacle of the idea of "Choosing to Live instead of Sacrifice" because Shade's problems being with a sacrifice. Creating a nice little character arc of for him.
    - Luminous works well because he is the Black Mage. I'm a sucker for certain tropes in writing, and here it creates a nice "The one to surpass me is myself" trope, if a bit more literal than normal. It's a battle between the ideals of one man split in two. Makes for an excellent end goal.
    - Evan. Evan is great because he creates the story of a simple farmhand trying to live up and eventually surpass the greatness of his predecessor. Additionally, he never fought the Black Mage, which for some reason is a boon to me. But the end of his story comes with him succeeding where Freud could not, and finally defeated the Black Mage. If someone were to write a novel about MapleStory, it would probably be from the perspective of Evan.

Nova, and the people of Grandis - I don't know why, but for some reason, I just don't like them as the Adversary. Perhaps when we progress more into the story of Darmoor and the High Flora I will like them a lot more there. None of them have a strong tie to the Black Mage, and as my writing has shown, I'm big on the whole "Strong ties of Fate" thing. Again, I will probably shift this opinion when it comes to the story of Darmoor. Except for Hoyoung. Aside from Yum Yum island, this guy exists entirely outside the story and other characters.

Sengoku, Beast Tamer, Jett/Zen, and Pink Bean - To my knowledge, these are non-canon and don't exist within the story. Also none of these characters have stories tied to the Black Mage. Being either focus on other characters [Sengoku] or have no agency in the world [BT/PB]

Kinesis and Mihile - These two characters, while having no ties to each other, still hold a similar flaw. They feel separate from the world in which they are supposed to exist. Kinesis is incapable of interacting with the "Real World" as Kinesis, and is instead stuck with the lines of someone from MapleWorld, while Mihile is supposed to be a great leader and powerful warrior. Mihile the Adversary suffers from "Player-Character isn't very smart" syndrome. They just act ooc when forced into the story, otherwise, they're great.

Xenon - Xenon is cool. Being the result of a commander's experiments and having incredible ties to Blockbuster 1. He just has a different [but good] story.

Congrats to the fool who has read this far. Please rest your eyes from my text for a bit. The story of the Demon and of the Child of the Goddess is one I want to talk about in great detail.

The Demon and the Child of the Goddess are characters seeking personal revenge against the Black Mage. Like it or not, they are the characters most directly affected by him. Because of the Black Mage, the Demon has lost his family, and his people now consist of about 4 other half-demons living in a basecamp, along with everyone living in the Tynerum. Because of the Black Mage, Rhinne was killed, and the Child of the Goddess was split in two and then sealed in the Mirror World.

With the Child of the Goddess, they are lost and without purpose. They escape from the Mirror World, wander around for a bit, and fight the Black Mage. As time goes on, they learn more and more that they don't know what they're supposed to do. At first, it's about just being the Transcendent. How is the Transcendent supposed to feel about the world? How is it supposed to help everyone? They are powerful, but they cannot figure out their place in the world. And what guide do they have? Rhinne refuses to speak, World Tree is scattered, Black Mage is Evil and Dead, Darmoor is Evil, Tana is Dead, and Chronica is gone. They defied fate, which was supposed to be impossible for a transcendent, only to learn that fate is only existing because their existence was meant to be a tool to control it. While I'm sure they will get for more fun in the future [and hopefully find all their answers]. In terms of being an Adversary, they make for a good one. Mostly because they're frequently shown to operate solely by their own agendas, which the Adversary is known to do. At least while they've started to learn their purpose, someone else hasn't.

The Demon. In terms of "Characters who suffer" I think Shade comes at a nice number 2, but the Demon takes it to a whole different place. Demon's happy ending isn't going to come for a long, long time. By the time of Glory, the Demon is just tired of the fighting. Demon ultimately summarizes the idea of "Keep bearing the pain of living." This makes for an excellent Adversary, who also has a very strong tie to the Black Mage.

On the Demon, I think that in terms of story, they interact with the world differently than any other character. Everything, the commanders, the transcendent, the Black Mage, is personal. It could be said that there are two stories in Maplestory. The story of the Adversary, who fought against Fate, and the Demon, who fought against the Black Mage.

Sorry for the long writing, I just needed to post this after it had been stirring in my head for a while.

[Reboot] Lv210 and 160 Arcane Force. Sitting at 450-500k range. Feel like I'm starting to hit a wall. Where to go from here? Currently not in a guild, been progressing solo.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 01:41 AM PDT

I feel like I've kind of hit a brick wall with Arcane River progression, and just trying to figure out how to proceed from here on my Pathfinder.

Right now I'm at 160 arcane force and just hit Lv210. I only have 4800 stat right now, which isn't too great, but I'm doing what I can solo right now. Did the Chu Chu quest line and got everything done there. I just looked up Chu Chu arcane symbols and see that the main way to get these daily is to run the PQ.

My issue is that I just don't have a network of people to play with. I haven't had a chance to find a guild yet, and honestly not really sure how best to find a good one. Not to mention that with my current range of 450k-500k, I'd feel like a leech and that no one would really want to drag me along into their own PQ since I wouldn't be able to really contribute.

I tried soloing normal and just couldn't kill fast enough to keep up. I could drop down to easy, but that's 3 symbols a day which doesn't seem ideal. Do I just go back to training at Reverse City until I get my range up? That's a slow process currently since I don't have access to stuff like Magnus and CRA carries, but it's getting there.

As far as gear goes, I'm working towards Von Leon gear with good flames. I'm using 6% stat Pensalir until then (two pieces still need 6% stat, but working on it). Sweetwater weapon I have already. Also using a decently flamed Wings of Fate. Using the Alien Fragment 3set. I had to temporarily break Treasure set to fit Alien in, but once I get a pendant to drop I'll have Treasure 3set again as well. My Emblem has 12% stat on it, secondary has 9% stat and 6% damage. Weapon has 15% IED and 7% attack. Two of my boss accessories have 6% stat on them as well. I don't have my pocket slot yet, but I will soon when I get the Rise Stamps for the trait potion, and I have a Holy Cup with 4% all stat flame on it to use when I unlock. Missing my Badge still, but I'm really close to killing NMag, just need to get mechanics nailed down. Not ideal potentials yet, but it's a work in progress. Everything is 10-11*.

EDIT: Was a bit off on range, I'm currently at 458k-539k. Pretty close to what I initially thought, though.

Why TF is there no 5th job skill steal for Phantom?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:41 AM PDT

Its the main mechanic of the character to skill steal. You can steal hyper skills, why stop there? It would add even more utility that would make Phantom more viable and more fun. It could replace phantom mark which arguably has the worst utility of phantom's 5th job skills. Imagine being able to steal the Big Huge Gigantic Cannonball skill (the bullet bills) from a cannon master.

How long does it take to get lv 65-100 playing angelic buster as first character on reboot

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:07 AM PDT

So far 12 hours into the game, made it to lv 65. I just completed the themed dungeons and powered through it. So now its just mobbing all the way to 100, but hard to find a place where I can solo kill monsters, since other people in the same area. I am stil using my default equiptment, a lot of empty slots. So almost all my stats is through levelling up. How long does it take to get 65-100 unfunded and no boost as angelic buster on reboot
